eco fashion week vancouver: kdon by kim cathers

based out of vancouver and a finalist in project runway canada, kim cathers has long been working around the subject of eco fashion. her label, kdon by kim cathers is composed entirely of recycled materials, with the fall 2011 collection making its debut at the eco fashion week vancouver.
this season is titled “suture”, with the designer being all vague and cool like that in giving us a lengthy list of definitions for the word, none of which particularly express why she chose it for her range. nevertheless, she does explain on her site, “I describe this collection, which essentially explains my most recent journey as, dark, dirty, troubled, divided, angular, falling, battling, confident, feminine, fearless, prepared, this collection is, therefore i (sic) am. an integral function of the universe.”
anyway, like some of the other designers such as lara miller at efwv, in her work ms. cathers does reference an environmentally-friendly nature: the clothes and jewelry have the casually, recycled layering effect with the sort of earthy-hippie nature that hints at far left-leaning views, but never goes overboard in spoon-feeding them to the viewer.
i also liked the sort of vivienne westwood-esque unschooled-liness in many of the draped pieces, which looked as though they were rather hastily composed by rapidly pinning layers on a dress form (although that sounds like a pull, it’s actually a compliment; i believe it makes for a rather nice effect). the one negative i saw here was that some of the designs didn’t feel particularly cohesive as a whole, but then again, the entire collection wasn’t available to me, so i probably shouldn’t judge. all the same, there were some very nice things, indeed.
